Division of Hematology and

Hematopoietic Cell Transplantation

Welcome! In 1976, City of Hope was one of the first medical centers in the nation to successfully perform bone marrow transplantation for leukemia. Today, we are one of the largest and most successful transplant programs in the world, with innovative protocols for patients with a variety of hematologic cancers and other diseases.

About the Name

Several years ago, the Division changed its name to reflect the larger scope of treatments and expertise that we now provide. Formerly the Division of Hematology and Bone Marrow Transplantation (BMT), the “Division of Hematology and Hematopoietic Cell Transplantation” encompasses all transplant procedures related to blood cells. Today, patients with diseases of the blood are no longer limited to bone marrow transplants from a matched family member. Now, City of Hope performs transplants with either bone marrow or peripheral blood cells, which can be obtained from related or unrelated donors, umbilical cords and, most commonly, the patient’s own blood.

This Web site contains useful information about treatment of cancers of the bone marrow and immune system, and about bone marrow and blood stem cell transplantation. You can also learn about our outstanding program, and the physicians who are experts in the care of patients with these disorders. We also discuss the innovative clinical research program that we have developed to improve the treatment results for patients.

The Hematologic Neoplasia Program at City of Hope has a long history of success in developing novel therapies for the treatment of patients with acute and chronic leukemia, malignant lymphoma, Hodgkin’s lymphoma, myelodysplasia and myeloproliferative disorders. We have designed and tested effective treatment programs for both the initial treatment as well as treatment of relapse for patients with these disorders.

In addition, City of Hope physicians and researchers are respected leaders in hematologic cancer research, as well as in helping to expand the application of transplant for treatment of other diseases. These include inherited disorders of the bone marrow, and autoimmune diseases such as scleroderma.

Our Leading Edge Approach

Many of the clinical trials that we are performing have promising clinical results that are designed to decrease treatment side effects and improve the cure rate for patients. Although patients are treated with a leading-edge approach, each patient who comes to City of Hope has his/her own physician throughout the course of treatment. This is just one way in which the department upholds the City of Hope credo: There is no profit in curing the body, if in the process, we destroy the soul.
